Rio Celeste

The Rio Celeste is a unique natural phenomenon in the world, where its waters acquire a bright turquoise blue color due to the mixture of volcanic minerals. Located in the Tenorio Volcano National Park, in the province of Alajuela, this destination will surprise you with its lush vegetation, trails surrounded by wildlife, and the imposing Rio Celeste Waterfall, which falls from about 30 meters high. It is a perfect place for nature and photography lovers.

The main activity is to take the approximately 3-hour hike along the park's trails, which will take you to viewpoints such as the Teñidero, where you can observe the exact point where two rivers meet and the water turns turquoise. You can also visit the blue lagoon and the river viewpoint, ideal for taking spectacular photos. If you are looking for more adventure, in the surroundings there are options for canopy, tubing, and horseback riding. Do not forget to bring a swimsuit, although swimming is prohibited in the park, there are nearby areas to cool off.

In nearby towns such as Bijagua or Guatuso, you will find local restaurants serving delicious Costa Rican typical dishes, such as casado (rice, beans, ripe plantain, salad, and meat or fish), ceviche, and empanadas. You can also try fresh tropical fruits like mango, papaya, and pineapple. For an authentic experience, look for sodas (small restaurants) where locals prepare homemade dishes at affordable prices.

For your visit to Rio Celeste, it is essential to bring comfortable walking shoes (preferably with good grip), insect repellent, biodegradable sunscreen, a raincoat or poncho for rain, and a reusable water bottle. Do not forget your camera to capture the landscapes and binoculars to observe birds and monkeys. If you plan to swim in nearby areas, bring a swimsuit and towel. Remember that the climate is humid and tropical, so light and quick-drying clothing is ideal.

The Tenorio Volcano National Park is open from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and it is recommended to arrive early to avoid crowds. The entrance fee is approximately $15 for foreigners, and a passport is required. The main language is Spanish, although some English is spoken in tourist areas. The altitude is around 600 meters, so the climate is warm and humid, with frequent afternoon rains. Tips are not mandatory, but they are appreciated in restaurants (10%).
